Brookland is DC’s new up and coming neighborhood. New developments, stores, restaurants and the vibrant and bustling arts district are drawing more visitors to explore these bungalow-filled streets. A neighborhood known to locals as DC’s “Little Rome” with streets lined with churches and chapels, home to the Catholic University, the domed Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception (the largest Roman Catholic Church in North America) and the 1898 Franciscan Monastery of the Holy and of America. Stroll the winding, flower edged pathways at The Franciscan Monastery for a quiet moment of reflection in the formal rose garden, home to the tiny Portiuncula Church, a replica of St. Francis original church in Italy, count the Chapels to the Virgin Mary at the National Shrine and explore the Romanesque buildings of the Catholic University. Monroe Street Market gives Brookland the artistic edge with 27 street-level artist studios known as Arts Walk, funky gastropubs and eateries, galleries and performance spaces.
Metro: Metro’s Red Line stops here at the Brookland station. The area is also located just off of the Metropolitan Branch biking and walking trail.
