This tranquil and storied neighborhood in DC offers diversity and peace and quiet, yet somehow also places guests close to all of the action. Nearby are some of DC’s top sites, best restaurants, one-of-a-kind bars, family-run businesses, interesting boutiques and sporting venues.
The neighborhood’s name, Capitol Hill, references its proximity to the center of the US government, with the Capitol’s rotunda visible from many points in the neighborhood (you’ll have a perfect view of it mere steps from your front door!). It is the largest, historic residential neighborhood in DC, stretching easterly in front of the Capitol along wide avenues. It is one of the oldest residential communities in Washington and, with roughly 35,000 people in just under 2 square miles (5 km2), it is also one of the most densely populated. Due to its size, the Capitol Hill neighborhood is often further delineated by Washingtonians into smaller enclaves, with the nearby Eastern Market and Barracks Row areas defining ours.
A short stroll from our home, Washington DC’s original and premier food & arts market, Eastern Market, is not to be missed! The impressive market anchors the neighborhood, serving as a hub for community and shopping for over 130 years. On weekends, Eastern Market especially comes alive, bringing together local artisans, farmers and small businesses for a lively, outdoor bazaar - a perfect place to people watch or pick up some unique finds.
Some of DC’s most celebrated restaurants line the streets of the historic Barracks Row quarter (named for the stately Marine Barracks that line 8th Street, the home to the Commandant of the Marines since 1806).
The oldest commercial district in DC, Barracks Row offers fantastic restaurants, a charming 100-year old theater named The Miracle, shopping and more.
Foodies should be sure to check out the nationally renowned Rose’s Luxury or the groundbreaking Pineapple & Pearls next door.
Nearby and housed in an old carriage house is the darling Little Pearl, a coffee bar and neighborhood hot spot for breakfast in the mornings and a perfect wine bar and restaurant for your evenings. And there are many other favorites we’re happy to recommend!
Entertainment options abound, as well, with baseball and concerts at Nationals Park and soccer at Audi Field in the adjacent Navy Yard neighborhood. Further afield and for a gaming fix, the MGM National Harbor is a short 7.5 miles down the 295 freeway.
You’re also a very short bus, Metro or Uber ride from a number of other neighborhoods that are not to be missed including the up-and-coming Union Market neighborhood and Chinatown, home to DC’s Capital One Arena.
Additional Neighborhood Notes
Nearby, you will find the following conveniences:- 1-hr dry cleaners and laundry service (1 block)- Trader Joe’s & Harris Teeter grocery stores (3-4 blocks)- CVS pharmacy (1 block)
- coffee shops (1-4 blocks)
Both the Eastern Market & Potomac Avenue Metro are approximately 7 minutes from the home on foot. Both Metro stops are served by the orange, silver and blue lines.
